Why an Ocean Pool

Ocean pools provide a safe, calm, and contained environment for swimming, including protection from dangerous riptides, and marine life (like sharks or jellyfish) while still offering the experience of being in the ocean.

They are particularly valuable for young children, the elderly, and tourists, and will make the Adelaide coastline more accessible to all abilities.

I'm Hilton, a retired civil engineer and, like many Australians, a lifelong beach enthusiast. I worked for the City of Holdfast Bay Council in managing city infrastructure assets for 16 years before retiring. I remember as a child enjoying the ocean pools that are everywhere in the Sydney surrounds, and the East coast of NSW. Lets build this for Adelaide!

The Change.org Petition

Below is the petition I started in an effort to convince one of the 5 coastal local councils of Adelaide to fund an engineering and environmental feasibility study.

After limited interest and no commitment from the local council, I personally funded this study, by the Water Research Laboratory of the University of NSW, and it identified 27 potential sites along the Adelaide metro coastline between North Haven South to Marino Rocks that would be suitable for an Olympic size ocean pool.

The estimated cost of building such a pool is between $2.5 to 5 million dollars. By comparison, the North Adelaide Aquatic Centre construction cost was ~$135 million.

Please show your interest by sending a message below. With your support, we will get it on the agenda of one of the 5 coastal local councils of Adelaide and/or the SA state parliament, and realise an ocean pool for Adelaide.
